What is a Visa?
A visa is a legal document that allows a non-Australian citizen to travel into and enter Australia, and/or remain in Australia permanently. There are many types of visas available depending on the length of time you want to stay in Australia as well as what you would like to do (e.g., work, study, holiday, visit a friend).
Visas can be broken down into two general groups

Permanent / Migrant Visas - these visas allow you to stay in Australia permanently.
Temporary Visas - these visas allow you to stay in Australia for a specific period of time and allow you to do certain activities during that time.

What is the government body that deals with visas and immigration?
In Australia visas are administered and regulated by the government Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). You can visit the DIAC website at http://www.immi.gov.au for up to date information on obtaining visas, immigration and citizenship.

Do I need a visa to enter Australia?
The law requires that every non-Australian citizen travelling to Australia needs to have an approved visa or authority to enter Australia. A notable exception applies to New Zealand citizens travelling on New Zealand passports who receive electronic visas allowing them to stay in Australia.

All other non-citizens, including people who migrated and now live in Australia permanently, must hold valid visas or authorities for re-entry to Australia. This includes students, workers, family members, tourists / short stay visitors, migrants and refugees. Everyone entering Australia must also complete an incoming passenger card, and non-citizens must make a health and character declaration on that card.

Are there any prerequisites or requirements for me to get a visa?
Eligibility for obtaining a visa varies depending on the type of visa you wish to apply for, your reason for wanting to enter Australia and also other personal details. Just ask us, it’s that simple.

Are there any academic requirements and do I need to sit any tests to get a visa?
Some Visa’s require potential applicants to sit tests in order to establish their level of proficiency within a particular academic area.

For instance, prior to applying for a 457 work visa or a Student Visa, potential applicants must sit an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test to determine their English language skill level, and they must generally book a place for this test well in advance of their application due to high demand.

Visa approval times depend on things like the Visa type and personal circumstances, including, but not limited to, Migration and Criminal histories.
